Reynolds' and Bateman's outrageous version of the usual plot -- THE CHANGE-UP Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

Bodies exchanging souls.  People exchanging lives.  Hollywood have tons of movies of the same plot and this is the route that the movie Change-Up dared to follow.

From Univercal Studios, Change-Up shares the story of bestfriends Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) and Dave (Jason Bateman) who slowly grew apart.  While Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three, Mitch has remained a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked.  To Dave, Mitch has it all: a beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), kids who adore him and a high-paying job as a lawyer.  To Dave, living Mitch's stress free life without responsibilities or consequences would be a dream come true.  As they envy each other's lives, one night after getting drunk, they woke up founding themselves in each other's bodies.  And this is where the conflicts, fun and realizations take place.

Sweet Revenge -- HANNA Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

Some people may see revenge movies as ordinary, repetitive and worse waste of time.  Well, I think otherwise, not because I'm an oppositionist by nature, but I somehow always give the benefit of the doubt to the film makers and wait on how they execute a story.  And from what I've been seeing, revenge films are often executed well.  Take for example movies like "Kill Bill", "A Law Abiding Citizen" and to a certain extent even "Dark Knight".

And this new movie, Hanna, is entering the big league of revenge movies.  From Columbia Pictures, Hanna stars Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan  as Hanna, Eric Bana (as Hanna's father Erik Heller) and Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (as CIA officer Marissa Wiegler).

Hanna narrates the story of a 16 year old girl named Hanna who lived in the wilderness of Finland and was trained by her her father to be a cold-blooded assassin.  But as soon as she said "I'm ready" to her father, she is then led to a series of hunting, killing and revelation of dark secrets.

More Than Sex -- FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

Romantic comedies come and go but only a few leave a lasting mark.  I did not expect too much from this new chick flick (if you may categorize it that way) from Columbia Pictures when it held a preview of the film at their headquarters in Shangri-la Mall.  All I expected are barrage of laughter and okay, I must admit, a few intimate scenes.  But I guess the film gave more than that!  =D

Friends with Benefits talks about the life, love and lust (haha) of Dylan ( Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis).  All they wanted is to add the simple act of sex to their friendship without of course damaging or destroying their bond.  But as they enjoy the physical intimacy, they will soon be led to a unique kind of complication plus a life changing self discovery.

Friends with Benefits is indeed sexy not only because of the too many skin and physical encounters shown in the movie but because how the story and its major characters are played up.  The characters are just too hard to resist and I somehow think that each sex would somehow want a piece of the character of Dylan and Jamie, Dylan being the LA guy who made it big in New York and of course getting a sassy headhunter and eventually a bed buddy and Jamie being the smart and hot chick with the oozing confidence.

Warrior to be shown exclusively in SM Cinemas starting September 28

Potato on the Go Bulletin:

SM Cinema in cooperation with Viva Films International presents the moving action drama Warrior.   From acclaimed director Gavin O' Connor, Warrior features rising stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as they command the screen as two estranged brothers facing the fight of a lifetime.

Haunted by a tragic past, Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his father (Nick Nolte) to train for Sparta, the biggest winner-takes-all event in mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path toward the championship while his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), an ex-fighter-turned teacher, returns to the ring in a desperate bid to save his family from financial ruin. But when Brendan’s unlikely, underdog rise sets him on a collision course with the unstoppable Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront each other and the forces that pulled them apart, facing off in the most soaring, soul stirring, and unforgettable climax that must be seen to be believed.

Brad Pitt is back on the big screen via Columbia Pictures' Moneyball

POTATO ON THE GO Bulletin:

Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt is back on the big screen with Columbia Pictures’ upcoming offering “Moneyball”.  "Moneyball" is based on the true story of Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) – once a would-be baseball superstar who, stung by the failure to live up to expectations on the field, turned his fiercely competitive nature to management.

Heading into the 2002 season, Billy faces a dismal situation: his small-market Oakland A’s have lost their star players (again) to big market clubs (and their enormous salaries) and is left to rebuild his team and compete with a third of their payroll. Driven to win, Billy takes on the system by challenging the fundamental tenets of the game.

He looks outside of baseball, to the dismissed theories of Bill James, and hires Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), a brainy, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist. Together they take on conventional wisdom with a willingness to reexamine everything and armed with computer driven statistical analysis long ignored by the baseball establishment.

That Doggie in the Window... Car Window

foydi's catch:

While I was sorting out my digital files earlier, I found this photo which I believed I took last Holy Wednesday while I was in NLEX.  I forgot to upload this one and share with you folks immediately, but it's better late than never right?  =)  So, here you go, "That Doggie in the Window... Car Window"!

This shot really made me smile!  =)  This doggie, which I think is a lab (labrador), is so well behaved!  That's why his master didn't worry to sit him at the back of the car.  Good dog!  =)  And to his master/s, good job!  =)

Love Radio's Nicole Hyala for Tatak Digitista

foydi's catch:

Before, the airwaves were dominated by English speaking and highly Americanized DJs.  They ruled the game.  That's until it was broken by Filipino speaking radio jocks who are loved by the masses like Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper of Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura under Manila Broadcasting Company's (MBC) Love Radio.

I'll be honest, at first, I was not a fan of the transition, well because I was used to what I was listening then.  But, everytime I hear the tandem talk at radio and release those thundering and earth shaking jokes, punchlines and laughters, I can't prevent my face muscles and laugh lines from moving in wild directions!  (and if in private, and if the punchline is really that good, laugh till it reach heaven!)  Haha, you folks have to admit and agree with me, that no matter how we are so dressed up or are stiff with our ties and formal clothes, we can't help but laugh with these radio talents who bring out our carefree side, in short the jologs in us!  Haha, and that's said on a good note folks, and I believe all of us have it within ourselves, in varying levels of course haha.

As a convert, and now that I am doing a  project with MBC (where, as mentioned, Love Radio is under) and have the chance to frequent the station, I did not let go of the opportunity to take this shot.  Yes folks, my latest recruit, Nicole Hyala for Tatak Digitista!  =D  Sayang lang, Chris Tsuper was not there earlier but there's always a sequel, you know!  Haha.

Pinoy Movie Time Goes Korean at SM Cinemas

Potato On the Go:

American entertainment in the 70s (Charlie’s Angels, Mission Impossible)… Japanese pop invasion in the 80s (Shaider, Bio-man)... Mexican and other Latin telenovelas in the 90s (Marimar, Betty La Fea)… And in 2000, the Taiwanese to Korean craze (Meteor Garden, Endless Love, My Sassy Girl)… There is no doubt that Filipinos’ entertainment choices and viewing habits change decade after decade. And currently, we are all witnesses that the Korean Entertainment scene has finally cemented its spot in Filipinos’ favorite viewing preferences!

And as a perfect example, with the ongoing Korean Tourism Month celebrations in the country, the public will have the rare opportunity to watch popular Korean films as the Korean Cultural Center and the SM Cinemas showcase a Film Festival this September.

Focusing on themes of love, the Korean Film Festival unreels on September 20-25 at the SM Mall of Asia and SM City North EDSA and at SM City Cebu from September 28 to October 2.

The movie Secret Reunion will be screened during the festival’s premiere nights in Manila on September 19 and in Cebu on September 28. Scandal Makers, A Happy Life, My Dear Enemy, Hwang Jin Yu, For Eternal Hearts, and Christmas in August will also be featured in the festival road show. All films will be free and open to the public.

Scandal Makers is about Nan Hyun Soo, a much sought after celebrity and DJ who is worshipped by teens. One of his listeners, Jung-nam sends him letters telling him of her willingness to see her father whom she never met. Her story becomes a hit and catalputs the show’s ratings. But one day, Jung – nam knocks on Hyun Soo’s door saying that he is the father she never met. Cha Tae Hyun, Park Bo Young, and Wang Suk Hyun star in the film.

Anna Faris desperately in search of a husband in the sexy comedy "What's Your Number?"

Potato On the Go:

Noted for her canny portrayals in comedy films like Scary Movie and House Bunny, Anna Faris this time plays the role of a single lady desperately in search of a husband in the sexy and risqué romantic comedy What’s Your Number? opposite the equally hot Chris Evans.

Tapping the taboo in adult conversations on the number of sex partners, “What’s Your Number?” initially introduces us to Ally Darling (Faris) on a quest to find a husband. Ally is a delightfully flawed woman who has just read in a magazine article warning that women who have had relationships with 20 or more men are unlikely to settle down and get married. In a panic, she realizes that she has reached her limit and instead of looking for a new boyfriend, she decides to revisit her 19 exes hoping to find the ideal one. Assisting her on this quest is her attractive neighbor Collin (Evans).

A Courtesy Call to Davao's Monarch, the Phlippine Eagle

BAYANIHAN REPUBLIC:

I've frequented Luzon and Visayas but even if I hate to admit it, I've never landed in Mindanao.  The planned vacations (Davao City) and even work related trips (Basilan, Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City) never pushed through, whether they were always being rerouted to another location or plainly canceled.  But this time, I made sure the plan finally pushes through.  And lucky enough, I was Mindanao bound, via Davao City!

Well, the trip was primarily for work but I tried to look for a window of opportunity to make a side trip, at least for what Davao is most famous for since I really have a very limited time.  And unfortunately, I can't also extend this time around as I have something to do immediately the day after my flight back to Manila.

After a series of radio guestings (DZMM, Bombo Radyo and RMN) and lunch at Harana, I headed to one of Davao's prides, the Philippine Eagle Center!  =)

Laughing at Ourselves! -- Horrible Bosses Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

The first time I heard about and saw Horrible Bosses, I knew I could relate to it.  Well, without naming names, I've been like Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, I've been through different monsters haha.  And I strongly feel I am not alone that's why I think Horrible Bosses can be a big hit, especially among its target market.

Horrible Bosses talks about the plight of three career driven men who are unlucky with their respective work environments.    Management candidate Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman) has been logging 12-hour days and eating everything his twisted supervisor Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey) dishes out, toward the promise of a well-earned promotion. But now he knows that’s never going to happen. Meanwhile, dental assistant Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) has been struggling to maintain his self-respect against the relentless X-rated advances of Dr. Julia Harris, D.D.S. (Jennifer Aniston), when she suddenly turns up the heat. And accountant Kurt Buckman (Jason Sudeikis) has just learned that his company’s corrupt new owner, Bobby Pellit (Colin Farrell), is not only bent on ruining his career but plans to funnel toxic waste into an unsuspecting population. What can you do when your boss is a psycho, a man-eater or a total tool?

What they did with their bosses, with the situation is something that you need to witness for yourself in the movie house!  =)

From Billionaire to Robber, Jesse Eisenberg leads bank robbery in 30 MINUTES OR LESS

Potato On the Go:

From the role of Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, actor-on-the-rise Jesse Eisenberg this time plays an under-achieving guy who has to put aside his epic falling out with an ex-bestfriend in order to rob a bank, in Columbia Pictures' new, action-comedy “30 Minutes or Less.”

In the film, Nick (Eisenberg) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wannabe criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The lowlifes kidnap Nick and strap a time bomb to him – with the promise that they’ll blow him up unless he robs a bank. With only a few hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.

Americal Idol 2011 Scotty McCreery for Tatak Digitista!

Scene Stealers:

After a long exhausting work week, I somehow looked forward for my Saturday to be something different and oh yeah, fun hehe.  I really needed that break or I'll really end up insane.  Well true enough, my weekend got a tweak when I received an invite from Solar Entertainment to the press conference of the American Idol Live! Tour 2011 in Manila Hotel!  But wait, this is not yet the story about that hehe.  =)

I'm posting this first as I can't wait but share with you the excitement and fulfillment I experienced earlier.  Finally, the first international celebrity to pose for Tatak Digitista is no less than 2011's American Idol himself Scotty McCreery!   Yes, I myself can't believe with this rare chance, but the AI guys, including Scotty of course, are really fantastic and friendly!  It was really a fun encounter!  And I bet, with this kind of attitude, these folks will go a long way!  =)

Avatar's 3D technology used in Glee the 3D Concert Movie

Potato On the Go:

You ask, 3D in a concert movie?  Yes, Glee the 3D Concert Movie is in 3D, and not in any ordinary 3D technology as it employed unparalleled 3D system used in “Avatar” to bring the audience right in the middle of a premium 3D experience rooting for their idols from the immensely popular ‘Glee’ television series.

“Glee The 3D Concert Movie” director Kevin Tancharoen closely collaborated with 3D pioneers and “Avatar” makers James Cameron and Vincent Pace to bring 3D into fruition while filming the concert during their sold out tours. Taking into consideration the waves of 3D movies that came out after “Avatar,” Tancharoen made sure that the 3D experience will be worth the audience will pay for in watching “Glee The 3D Concert Movie.”

Side A celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a new album named "Side A 25"

Potato on the Go:

Those who know me too well would know that there are only two bands that stayed in my favorite list for a long time, or even up to now rather.  And  I know, if they are reading this, I can already hear them shouting the names of those bands.  Hehe.  They are Eraser Heads and of course Side A.

Anyway, for this post, let me talk particularly about Side A, as they are celebrating a momentous event this year... their 25th Anniversary!  And for 25 years, I for one would like to thank Side A for enriching OPM with songs such as Forevermore, Tuloy Pa Rin, Tell Me, Set You Free, By Your Side and Let the Pain Remain and many more.  Personally, these songs are among my youth's soundtrack and they truly are special to me.  My close friends are surely nodding their heads right now and I would probably here the lines "You bet!"  and "Absolutely!".  I think what made them a hit and stay on top for a long time is Side A was able to capture the heart... the musical taste of Filipinos; they were able to hit our soft spot... our sentimental and poetic side.  That's why now, after they braved the storms and persevered through whatever trends, Side A has been synonymous with an unmatched classic-after-classic repertoire of songs and unequaled live performances here and abroad, for 25 years... and counting!

The band – composed of founding member Naldy Gonzales, veteran guitarist/vocalist Joey Generoso and veteran drummer Ernie Severino, former Take One guitarist Leevon Cailao and former Freeverse bassist Ned Esguerra –aren’t resting on their collective laurels. Their music lives on and just like wine, it gets finer with every new musical outing. Timed to their celebration of the band’s Silver Anniversary, Warner Music releases a special collection entitled “SIDE A 25”, a double-disc offering that includes twenty-five years of the greatest and bestmusic that the band has created.

Astrovision and Astroplus, Preserving the Best Movies, Keeping the Precious Memories

Action & Event-ure:

I'm a big movie fan.  If you've been reading my blog religiously, I bet this is not much of a revelation to you anymore =).  I think I got this from my dad who had really been an A1 movie follower.  Whether it's at the theater or TV or VHS, be sure he's among the firsts to check his most liked films.  There are movies though that are way beyond my generation but my father was able to introduce me to them.  Think of the first Indiana Jones, The King and I, Ten Commandments, haha, I learned that and the stories behind it from him.  So I grew up with the movies; and I just know when one title should be kept, be part of the collection and be watched over and over again.  Before, it was hard getting your own original copies of your favorite movies but thank heaven and earth for the rise of video shops like Astrovision / Astroplus!  Now, when one movie is destined to be classic, getting your own copy is as easy as buying a hamburger!  =)

For me, getting a video copy of my favorite or a memorable film does not only give me the chance to watch it anytime I want but it allows me to preserve a memory, a special moment in my life, when I  first saw and enjoyed that movie.  I for example would always be reminded of our family and Christmas gatherings when I watch The Sound of Music, of my fun college buddies and our movie trips when I see Anaconda and I Know What You Did Last Summer, of my co-movie fan brother and our pizza nights when I play Underworld and X-Men videos at home, and some cheesy moments when I get a glimpse of She's All That haha =D.  How about you?  What's the story behind your favorite movie?  =)

So when I got the invite from Orange Magazine TV about the first Bloggers Blowout of Astrovision, I of course immediately said yes.  How could a movie blogger (and a long time movie fan) could be out of this momentous occasion?  =)  And I'm glad I was part of it because I got to know the brands and the people behind the movie / video industry and the things they are doing for movie fanatics like me.  =)

Resorts World Manila to stage the spectacular adaptation of The Sound of Music

POTATO ON THE GO (Theater):

"Panoorin mo 'to.  (Watch this.)  This is an internationally acclaimed classic."  This was the line of my dad when he first encouraged me to watch The Sound of Music.  And since then, The Sound of Music has always been in the list of my favorite stories, whether it's in theater or movie or animated series!  Not because it was told to me by my father but I myself witnessed how great the story and beautiful the music is of The Sound of Music.   And when I heard that Resorts World Manila is planning to bring back and stage the said musical, I felt nothing but excitement!

Joanna Ampil plays the lead role of Maria.
A musical by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria Rainer, a young postulant  in Austria who is appointed governess of the seven children of widower Captain Georg von Trapp and changed their lives by teaching them the gift of music.  This will be the key for the children in finding their voice and unlocking the cold and stern heart of their father to warmly loving them.  But the Captain's unlocked heart will also lead him to an unexpected love with Maria which will become the latter's most challenging trial of faith.  Soon, they find themselves threatened by uncertainties of wartime as they struggle to build a new life together.

At the preview of the The Sound of Music in Resorts World Manila's Newport Performing Arts Theater, I was again reminded on the very reason why I got hooked with The Sound of Music.  And this time, the feeling was more magnanimous as I saw the added flavors that Resorts World Manila has put not only to differentiate their version of the musical, but to make it even much bigger!

Why virus is more terrifying than vampires and ghosts! -- Contagion Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

Let's admit it, many of us are fascinated watching suspense thrillers and horror movies that dealt with vampires and ghosts as antagonists!  We enjoy the fright, the scream and the ride.  But I guess what can really terrify is to witness how real things can actually kill us!  This is what I saw from the suspense thriller movie "Contagion" screened earlier during its premiere in IMAX SM Mall off Asia.

Contagion narrates the story of the people living in the different parts of the world affected by the rapid progress of deadly airborne virus that kills within days.  As the fast-moving epidemic spreads, the global medical community and government institutions race to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself.  The best and worst in people come out as they struggle to survive in a society that is falling apart.

As mentioned earlier, what makes this movie more terrifying is that it is actually based on reality and the recent events that took place and created global paranoia.  Think of AH1N1, Bird Flu and SARS and you'll know what I am talking about.  Virus actually kills unlike vampires and ghosts!  Oh well, yeah, they can also kill, but only those with heart problems or those who will get into accident when people reacts with panic!  =D  Anyway, the film was able to narrate in a very detailed yet creative passion how a virus is transmitted.

Sony Pictures' Vampire Movie PRIEST is Now on Home Video!

Potato On the Go:

Many of us like vampire movies right?  If you answered no, then you are among the few boring people on Earth!  Haha,  just kidding.  =)  Anyway, one vampire movie I failed to see in the big  screen is Sony Pictures' (released locally by Columbia Pictures) Priest.  And from the trailer I've seen before, I know this is just one 3D sci-fi action film I cannot miss.  But the good news is, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment through Magnavision has just released the Blu-ray™, DVD, and VCD of the unrated edition of the action horror film Priest!

Priest tells the story of an exiled warrior who must save humanity from a race of murderous vampires.  Reigniting the war between men and vampires, this visually stunning action epic stars Paul Bettany (Legion, The Da Vinci Code), Cam Gigandet (Twilight) and Maggie Q (TV’s “Nikita”) as a group of rogue warriors on a mission to rescue a beautiful young woman (Lily Collins, The Blind Side) from a priest-turned-vampire (Karl Urban, Star Trek) bent on destroying humanity.

Directed by special effects maven Scott Stewart (Legion), PRIEST has made believers of movie fans around the globe with its striking mix of hard-hitting action, spellbinding post-apocalyptic imagery and breakthrough visual effects. Also starring Academy Award® nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, 2009’s The Last Station) and Stephen Moyer (TV’s “True Blood”), PRIEST is a visionary new take on vampire mythology that action and horror fans won’t want to miss when it sinks its teeth onto Blu-ray DVD, and VCD!

Yoohoo, Who Wants Crocodile Ice Cream?

Bayanihan Republic:

Right after the presscon of Team Cortal SQR - Azkals in Davao City, we took a time off and headed to Crocodile Park.  While having that afternoon siesta, Azkals' Yannick Tuason, who is also from Davao, introduced us to his brothers and friends including Chef Dino Dizon (also known as the Crocodile Chef from Davao) who owns a different kind of ice cream brand dubbed as the Sweet Spot!

Just in front of the Crocodile Park, Sweet Spot offers  luscious flavors with unique names such as Mt. Apo Coffee Crush, Mangomazing, Davao Chololoco, Purple Pleasure, Peanut Brittle, Melon Madness, Crazy Monkey Banana, and the new Dragon Fruit (which I usually encounter in FB's Cafe World and Restaurant City! hehe)  But what really caught my attention is the Durian Dynamite!  Why?  'Because that's the flavor we jokingly dubbed as the Crocodile Ice Cream!  Yes folks, Durian Dynamite, Davao's local gem is mixed with another local treasure, the egg of a crocodile!  =D  Perhaps, way back, I won't be as courageous to try new or exotic dishes but I was enlightened with what Travel Time's Susan Calo Medina said in one of her interviews.  She said, on taking exotic food, "I'll try it once.  If I like it, I'll take it again.  If not, then at least I experienced it."

The Durian Dynamite Ice Cream which we jokingly dubbed as the Crocodile Ice Cream as it uses crocodile egg as ingredient.  Sorry for the crater, Misagh tried it first!  Haha =D

Misagh Bahadoran was not as adventurous so he opted for Crazy Monkey Banana.  But we joked at him and said that the flavor he chose was mixed with monkey milk!  And everyone laughed!  =D

The rest of the flavors though do not use crocodile eggs.   While the rest are enjoying their ice creams, I asked the Sweet Spot staff why is the Durian Dynamite the only flavor using the crocodile egg.  He said that the the one with crocodile egg is a little more pricey.   All the flavors are priced at PhP 35 per scoop but the Crocodile Ice Cream is at PhP 70. Well, I guess we can assume why a crocodile is more expensive than a chicken right?  =D  Anyway, Dino Dizon said that a crocodile egg is 80% egg yolk, which means it has less cholesterol.  And hence, a crocodile egg gives more protein and energy than an ordinary egg!  So there's a premium added into it!  =)
