The Invasion of Mushroom Chicharon!

Bayanihan Republic:

In today's fast-paced urban lifestyle, we tend to grab food that's readily available but not necessarily nutritious and healthy.  And many experts have pointed out the danger of the unhealthy food that we eat.  With that, many of us have tried many things that will let us take in the "healthy" stuff but as much as possible, not forego the food we fell in love with.

So we heard about the vitamin beer, veggie meat, garden fresh pizza, and the list goes on and on.  In late 2009 or early 2010, I remembered posting on my Facebook wall about my grocery discovery then -- the vegetarian chicharon of Marty's Cracklin'!  And surprisingly, it generated many comments from my friends and a lot of them just got interested with the said product.

Those who were "purist" in healthy living still did not buy the idea but as for me, it was already a better option for those who want to avoid the risks of eating our well loved (but a little deadly!) chicharon =)  Well, that was until I discovered another culinary wonder this time from Enlins Bakeshop & Restaurant in Malolos, Bulacan!

Let me present... the Mushroom Chicharon!

Yes friends, you're not dreaming it's chicharon and it's not from the dreaded pork skin.  It's mushroom and it somehow tastes like chicken skin!  Dip it in vinegar, and the gastronomic experience is complete -- the heavenly taste of chicharon sans the guilt!

Well, to be honest, chicken skin and other pork chicharon like our favorite Chicharon Carcar (Cebu) or Chicharon San Miguel (Bulacan) are still way better but this one is the next best thing and the healthy alternative!  And I think, it's a welcome treat for us, don't you think? =)

The label says it's made in Plaridel, Bulacan but for those who wants to try it, I think it's available in any Enlins shop in Bulacan.

So to the yet unnamed inventor of this product, my kudos and thanks go to you! =)
