Potato On the Go:
I'll be honest, at first, I was a little hesitant to check out the movie Bridesmaids (as I initially thought it's just another ordinary chick flick) but since Tatak Digitista's "Potato On the Go" section should always be on the go for movies and Solar Entertainment people are among the nicests in the industry, I took a crack of it. And after that special screening at Solar's preview room in its Makati headquarters, I just can't stop thanking them for inviting me! I really had a great, awesome, rocking time watching this smash comedy from Universal Pictures... Bridesmaids!
Directed by Paul Feig and written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids tells the story of Annie (Kristen Wiig), a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her bestfriend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) and a group of crazy bridesmaids Helen (Rose Byrne), Megan (Melissa McCarthy), Rita (Wendy McLendon-Covey) and Becca (Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down to matrimony. But Annie's "car's tail light" is broken and needs a "fix" but when she finds out her best friend since childhood just got engaged, she simply must be Lillian's maid of honor, no matter what. Though in a mess with relationships, finance and career, Annie courageously and crazily went through the stressful pre-wedding rituals. But this won't give her an easy time and will test her ability to rise from the "rock bottom".
At first, as I said earlier, I thought it will just be the usual girlie movie or chick flick that we used to see but Bridesmaids really surprised me big time! The movie is extremely hilarious and my jaws ached for hours after watching! If only the director Paul Feig can hear me staying STOP as I was already crying hard while laughing! =D
I consider Bridesmaids to be the women's answer to men's equally outrageous Hangover! Aside from the fact that Bridesmaids also narrate the adventures and misadventures of a wedding entourage right before the event, the movie matched the brand of humor and comedy that Hangover successfully offered!
Perhaps, the big difference may be, aside from the sexes, is Bridesmaids effective, consistent and well mixed transition from being hilarious to serious, from crazy to meaty, from entertaining to a little thought provoking. The writers were able to effectively plant and play off the "broken tail light" of Annie's car. It was first a point for laughter then an object to sustain the scenes and then a symbol for the movie's lasting lessons. As we are transported to the crazy world of these women, I think both sexes can relate to the ordeals of people who are undergoing the wedding stress, friends who have not yet moved on, singles and career driven people looking for what they need to do in their lives and finding their place in this world, and everyone looking for real relationships. In fact, I think, watching Bridesmaids is like seeing and laughing at and not being too hard on ourselves. But after which, it makes us examine our lives and realize what we ought to do.
Acting of course is a brilliant! Kristen Wiig's (Annie) is so natural in both her comic and dramatic scenes; Maya Rudolphy (Lilian) is a born comedienne, she doesn't need to do an acrobat stunt to be funny; Wendi McLendon-Covey (cynical cousin Rita) brought the house down with her deviant lines; Melissa McCarthy (Megan) was a spectacular scene stealer; and Rose Byrne (Helen) is the lovable lady you'll hate in the entire movie! =D To add, Annie's love interest Nathan Rhodes (Chris O' Dowd) was a funny charmer!
From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving Bridesmaids a loud 8 matched with thundering laughter! =D To be distributed by Solar Entertainment Corporation, Bridesmaids opens today, July 20, exclusively in all SM Cinemas in the Philippines.
