Laughing at Ourselves! -- Horrible Bosses Movie Review

Potato On the Go:

The first time I heard about and saw Horrible Bosses, I knew I could relate to it.  Well, without naming names, I've been like Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, I've been through different monsters haha.  And I strongly feel I am not alone that's why I think Horrible Bosses can be a big hit, especially among its target market.

Horrible Bosses talks about the plight of three career driven men who are unlucky with their respective work environments.    Management candidate Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman) has been logging 12-hour days and eating everything his twisted supervisor Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey) dishes out, toward the promise of a well-earned promotion. But now he knows that’s never going to happen. Meanwhile, dental assistant Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) has been struggling to maintain his self-respect against the relentless X-rated advances of Dr. Julia Harris, D.D.S. (Jennifer Aniston), when she suddenly turns up the heat. And accountant Kurt Buckman (Jason Sudeikis) has just learned that his company’s corrupt new owner, Bobby Pellit (Colin Farrell), is not only bent on ruining his career but plans to funnel toxic waste into an unsuspecting population. What can you do when your boss is a psycho, a man-eater or a total tool?

What they did with their bosses, with the situation is something that you need to witness for yourself in the movie house!  =)

Well, all I can say is Horrible Bosses is a strong comic relief to millions of people out there, who like the main characters, are stressed and suffering from their bosses and job situation!  =)  The bosses here are indeed extremely horrible (well, probably except for Jennifer Aniston hehe).  The bosses are interpreted in an exaggerated way to maximize the conflict and the justification of the eventual resolution and of course the fun and wackiness in the movie!  The acting of Kevin Spacey, Collin Farrell and Jeniffer Aniston is a big part why the movie can really drive us crazy!  Add that up with the insane situations that the main characters underwent, I bet you will be laughing all the way in the movie.  But still, it's like laughing at ourselves, our crazy filled situations and the thought we could actually have done or do what the lead actors did to their bosses (or perhaps, we're at the other side of the fence and we're laughing at what we're doing with our people!)!  Haha.  Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis were so animated making them perfect for their respective roles!  Scene stealer is Jamie Fox who I never imagined playing that kind of mysterious role!  Hahaha.  From the three main actors though, Charlie Day rose because of funny husky and squeaking voice and the way he played up his character rejecting the temptation of Jennifer Aniston.

The movie is fun but I expected more from Horrible Bosses.  It was just bad for me to expect something like "Office Space" in the late 90s.  I somehow expected a fun movie that is based on realistic situations in a way, and some simple thought provoking lines that could help enlighten the audience. Well, the situations of the main characters are somehow that people can relate with like a boss who's blocking the promotion, a son of the owner who assumes a position which he does not deserve and a superior who harasses the subordinate sexually but their characters are spiced to fit the type of movie they're in.  Perhaps what's lacking is a little more establishing scenes on the lead characters' struggles with their bosses before jumping into their grand mission impossible.

Well, I guess Horrible Bosses is designed that way, it's just meant to be fun, crazy and hilarious!  And they are successful in that way, although the humor is not the type that can make you fall from the chair like Hangover. But don't get me wrong, you'll still laugh from start to finish and you'll definitely enjoy your time watching this movie.  You'll also get the solid laughs you want especially on Jeniffer's and Charlie's encounters!  Haha.  Catch it with your friends and work colleagues, it will definitely be a great bonding time!  =)

From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving Horrible Bosses a killer 7!  From Warner Bros., Horrible Bosses opens in theaters on September 21.

  1. My favorite character would have to be Dale (Charlie Day). He was the one who made me laugh consistently through the whole movie. His paranoid acting just makes me laugh! I definitely plan on seeing this movie again very soon. I am really excited because the Blockbuster Movie Pass will give customers a huge selection of DVDs like Horrible Bosses, along with TV shows and games by mail. Since it is being offered by DISH Network (who is also my employer), there are 20 channels that are included with the Movie Pass in addition to the thousands of movies and shows that you can stream to your TV or PC! Blockbuster also has many stores that you can exchange DVDs at and Blu-Rays are included! For all that, $10 per month is great!
