Greatness from Imperfections -- J. EDGAR Movie Review

POTATO ON THE GO REVIEW (Movie):

One thing I admire about Leonardo DiCaprio is how how he progresses as an actor, how he outdo what he has done previously, and how he reinvents himself and presents a whole new package everytime he comes out in a movie.  And this is what I witnessed in the latest  movie offering of Warner Bros., J. EDGAR.

J. EDGAR tells the story of J. Edgar Hoover who was considered as the face of law enforcement in USA for almost 50 years.  He was feared and admired, reviled and revered.  But behind closed doors, he held delicate secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.  Directed by Client Eastwood, J. EDGAR, topbilled by Leonardo DiCaprio explored the life, both public and private, of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th Century.  The movie also stars Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman, Ed Westwick, and Jeffrey Donovan.

Our Favorite Taho

BAYANIHAN REPUBLIC:

Tahoooo!!!  Tahoooo!!!  Tahooooo!!!  I used to hear this line in our neighborhood in Makati City (a city in Metro Manila) when I was a kid.  This often wakes me up during Saturday mornings (as for weekdays, I usually wake up at 5:30 am for my morning classes, which is way earlier than the round of that morning shouts).  So during weekends, when I hear that shout, I immediately grab my cup from the kitchen and run towards the gate to buy my favorite taho which I think is an icon in Pinoy's breakfast meal.

Taho is a Philippine snack food, traditionally sold and taken during mornings, made out of medium firmness tofu, arnibal (similar to caramel) and sago (similar to pearl tapioca).  Philippines' taho, which can be found anywhere in the country, is similar to Indonesia's and Malaysia's tahu.  Ancient records suggest that taho originated from the Chinese douhua.  Even before the Spanish conquest of the Philippine islands, Chinese traders have interacted with our forefathers, hence enriching our culinary.

Taho is made by processing the silken tofu to become a very fine custard. Brown sugar will be caramelized to create the arnibal which will sweeten the recipe. Sago will be boiled until it becomes gummy. All the ingredients will be put into two large aluminum cans - sago and arnibal (plus the plastic cups and money) ompartmentalized in one can while the actual taho will be in the other container.  Once a customer buys, the three main ingredients will then be put in a cup and mixed. And taho is then ready to be taken either by using a spoon or sipping it from the cup.

The Zipline to Courage!

BAYANIHAN REPUBLIC:

At the start of the year, I crafted a personal battle cry.  And it's "New World in 2012".  It has been my practice to come up with such line for my personal goal setting for the coming year.  It started in 2008 with "2008 will be great", and then followed by "Shine in 2009", then "Golden 2010" and last year's "Get Even in 2011".  Here are links to articles in Tatak Digitista to give you some more backgrounder.

http://digitista.blogspot.com/2010/02/enjoy-halo-halo-treat_78.html
http://digitista.blogspot.com/2010/03/tatak-digitista.html
http://digitista.blogspot.com/2011/12/tatak-digitistas-11-in-2011.html

Anyway, true to that goal I set for the year, I'm bolder this time around, to conquer new worlds.  New world does not necessarily mean a new place.  It could also be a new experience which can be a world in itself.  And lucky enough, a couple of weeks ago, I hit a personal milestone for the year by doing something for the first time.

Guess what I just did?  I just tried doing the zipline in Tagaytay!  :)  I know some of you may react that it's not that difficult to do but folks, each person has a different body chemistry and psyche, and what may be easy for one may be difficult for another person and vice versa.  At first, I was quite hesitant to do it (and I just want to ride the cable car.  It was not my first time though since I've already tried it in Sentosa, Singapore.).  Why?  Well, perhaps because of fear that I don't know how my body will react to heights (since I had a not so good experience last time) and how my friends will respond since I feel am not that fit to do the zipline.

POTATO ON THE GO BULLETIN (Theater):

Who among you plays Snoopy's Street Fair or follows Charlie Brown and Snoopy in cartoon strips and cartoons?  Well, don't be contented with that as this coming February 2012, you can actually witness them live and in a much grander scale!  9 Works Theatricals which brought and staged in Manila the successful runs of Rent and Sweet Charity is presenting the timeless characters from Charles M. Lucy’s all-time crush is the sensitive piano-playing Schroeder who is an admirer of Beethoven. Meanwhile, Snoopy, Charlie Brown’s wise-cracking yet lovable dog, and Linus, Charlie Brown’s blanket-toting best friend, daydream all day as their friends battle with kites, school, and for Sally, Charlie Brown’s lil’ sis, getting a “D” in last week’s homework.

Experiencing Chinese New Year in Binondo (for the 1st time!)

BAYANIHAN REPUBLIC:

Some say that my small eyes make me look Chinese.  In fact, when I was sent to China for work, some of the locals have always mistaken me to be just like them.  They kept on talking to me in Mandarin :).  However, although my mom's ancestors have a little Spanish lineage as well, I still consider myself  more than100% Filipino.  That doesn't mean though that I don't value the Chinese influence in the Filipino culture.  Of course I do, especially when I took Mandarin classes (although Fookien is the one most spoken in the Philippines) a few years back when I finally appreciated the value of their traditions, which I never paid attention before.

And with my interest and curiosity for the Chinese custom, I actually have planned at the start of the year (during my personal goal setting session) that I'll celebrate Chinese New Year this time around!

A few weeks back, I was asking around who were interested to join me or who among our Chinoy (Filipino Chinese) friends celebrate new year in Binondo (Philippines' China Town).  And again, there was no one as excited as me.  I guess I just have to face it that my kind, the culture junkie, is really rare haha :D.  'But heaven and earth reconciled and made something even more special for me.  I was tasked to be part of the grand new year celebration of the country's largest and leading insurance company Philam Life!  My wish was simple, just to witness a Chinese New Year in Binondo but what was given to me was even something bigger, something more spectacular, something more captivating!

Uratex offers a good start for the Chinese New Year

FISH AND TELL:

I've shared a lot of stories here already that somehow gave you an idea how hectic my schedule is, from work, to blogging, to personal life; my situation is really quite bizarre!  And for the working class where I and I guess most of you belong, sleeping has already become a luxury!  Before when we're much younger, we've taken sleep for granted, but for now, we are so hunting for them!  And for such rare opportunities when we can have that most needed sleep, we wanted it to be really that good, hence we make sure our sheets are comfy, our pillows are soft, our room's cooling system works well, our room's sound and view can rock us to sleep, and of course our bed can bring us to clouds to rest and rejuvinate.

Well, if you haven't equipped your sleeping station yet with those stuff I mentioned, then better start it at as soon as possible!  And there's no better time to do that but at the start of the Chinese New Year when we acquire or receive things that give us fortune and positive vibes that we need to keep us going and fire up our much wanted success for the coming year!  As we get mini water fountain that is known to let good luck flow continuously in our abode, or a precious piece of jewelry made of jade, or any of the numerous lucky charms in Chinese Feng Shui, we also need to supply ourselves with cool yet useful and convenient things in the house that can gear up our quest for wealth, health and anything in between.

Take the case of Uratex mattresses which can provide us a comfortable bedroom which we need for our so much desired (in fact needed!) health and wellness.

Everyday Deluxe Mattress

Everyone desires a good night’s sleep, which is helpful to everybody because it helps us recharge our tired bodies after a hard day’s work. And this is where the Uratex Premium Mattress line comes in, with products like Premium Touch Cozy Latex, Premium Touch Viscoluxe Memory, and Purifoam.

SM Cinema Launches the 1st Bigshot Film Festival

POTATO ON THE GO (Movie):

In college, as a communications student, I went through the process of producing my own film (together with my team mates).  Though it was a difficult and tedious procedure, I enjoyed it a lot as I was able to learn film making in action, squeeze our group's creative juice and have fun and bond with our production team.  And I'm also happy to reminisce the glorious awards night when we won grand slam for that project in the student film festival where our movie was part of.

And this is what I happily recalled when I attended the recent press conference of the first ever Bigshot Film Festival in the country.  The project which searched for promising student filmmakers was spearheaded by SM Cinema in its support to advance film literacy in the country and promote Philippine cinema as a vehicle to cultivate and nurture our cultural identity.   These students are so lucky to have been given this opportunity to produce their own films and have its commercial run in the country's largest theater network.  Not all good and promising students are given this chance!  I would have joined this project if there was already a Bigshot Film Festival during my time.  :)

The Bigshot project was conceptualized in 2010 after movie exhibitors including SM Cinema received a 10% reduction on amusement tax. The project was SM Cinema’s way of giving back to the film industry by means of supporting independent movies made by budding student filmmakers.

When a film banks on effective story telling -- WE BOUGHT A ZOO Movie Review

POTATO ON THE GO REVIEW (Movie):

At a time where jazzed up editing and spectacular special visual effects are the most recognizable selling points of a movie, here comes a simple yet powerful film which banked on the basic story telling (which should be each film's first and basic foundation) and nailed it right.

From the director of Jerry Maguire, Cameron Crowe, comes a highly entertaining, heartwarming adventure and family movie called WE BOUGHT A ZOO.  Inspired by the true story about a single dad who dreams up the coolest, most unusual gift a parent could ever give his family: a zoo.  The family travels from the city to their new home in the wilds of upstate New York, where their ramshackle zoo is waiting to be restored to its former glory.

Kate Beckinsale Returns as Selene in UNDERWORLD AWAKENING

POTATO ON THE GO BULLETIN (Movie):

Fans of Kate Beckinsale and  the first two Underworld films will surely be thrilled by the return of the actress as the fearsome Vampire huntress Selene, in Columbia Pictures' 3D action-thriller “Underworld Awakening.” “We really wanted to work with Kate again,” says producer Gary Lucchesi. “Sometimes the stars just align themselves perfectly and this is one of those times.”

Beckinsale admits she thought twice about slipping back into the familiar skintight black latex suit before accepting the part again. “But it was a life-changing role for me, so I feel very affectionate towards it. It’s exciting to be able to follow a character over such a long period of time. It’s rare to get that chance.”

Tom Rosenberg, Lakeshore Entertainment chairman and CEO, says he’s thrilled to have Beckinsale in the film. “She is Selene, and Selene is the heart and soul of Underworld. Right from that first scene in the first film, she embodied the perfect tone.”

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. Unknown to the Queen, The Huntsman becomes the protector of the young woman threatening her reign, training her in the art of war. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White's beauty and power. This breathtaking new twist of the legendary tale is from producers Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland), Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

The Horse Takes Over The Cart!

BAYANIHAN REPUBLIC:

In 2010, I posted this article Pinoy Cow retires from driving the cart.  I was amused with what I saw but at the same time missed the cow pulling the cart which I grew up with.

Almost two years after, I saw another innovation of the said cart.  Now, another animal is driving it!  Yes, what you are seeing is a horse.  Well, perhaps the owners felt using the horse is more practical since it's
much faster than the original cow pulling the cart.

This shot was taken at the Mac Arthur Highway in Malolos, Bulacan.

A Classic Story with Cutting Edge Execution -- SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS Movie Review

POTATO ON THE GO REVIEW (Movie):

For movie makers, transforming a literary classic into a movie masterpiece is always a challenge.  If one follows the story page per page, he may hear reactions that it's no different from the book.  'But if he changes it dramatically, he will surely hear nasty remarks from the book fans.  For me, once a book is made into a film, the director and screen writer are given the freedom to make their cinematic interpretations of the literary piece.  And from the recent movie I saw, the SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS, during its recent Philippine premiere by Warner Bros. in Glorietta 4, I could say that the film makers are able to give an edgy execution out of a literary classic and well loved characters.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and written by Michele Mulrony and Kieren Mulroney SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS is an action mystery movie based on the character of the same name created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  A sequel to the 2009 film SHERLOCK HOLMES, the movie brings back Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law to reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, and several other actors as characters they played in the 2009 film.   The film is inspired by Conan Doyle's work The Final Problem, but it is an independent story rather than a strict adaptation and this where cinematic freedom is maximized.

Nirvana in Crustasia -- Enjoying Asia's Best Crab Dishes in Manila

ACTION & EVENT-URE:

We Filipinos love eating crabs!  Sometimes, it defines how Pinoys we are on how we eat them.  There's no really science behind it but I believe you'll agree with me that there's a certain technique in eating it right?  And if one seems to be doing it the wrong way, he or she may hear this line: "Hindi ka marunong kumain ng alimasag / alimango"  (You don't know the proper way to eat crab).  And as a Pinoy, that's a shame!  Haha.  That's why eating crabs in restos and hotels is very much challenging for me (and reserve eating it at home), sometimes to avoid the hassle, I would order something else.

Well not this time around!  I was proven wrong when I was recently invited to a resto in Power Plant Mall   called Crustacia Asian Bistro.  Crustasia Asian Bistro specializes in crab dishes and other authentic Asian seafood cuisine.

This time, eating crabs is as easy as counting 1 2 3.  They just made it too customer friendly!  Right before the dishes are served, there are green apron like wear that we can use to avoid stains from the food that we eat.  Then there are crab crackers that we can use to dig down the crab meat and savor its taste.  Then if it's really too challenging to break the shells, we can ask the waiter to do it for us.  :)  That's what I can say as Crabbing 101!  :)

POTATO ON THE GO BULLETIN:

Warner Bros. continues to be one of the formidable forces in movie making as it unveils its powerful line-up for 2012.   Warner Bros' offering of the year consists of much awaited tent-pole releases (“The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hobbit”), blockbuster sequels (“Wrath of the Titans,” “Sherlock Holmes 2”), potential franchise-starters (“Jack and the Giant Killer,” “Dark Shadows”) and prestige titles (“Gravity,” “J. Edgar”). With all these surefire bets, what's not to like?
